GoGo Sisters St. Patty’s Day fundraiser

The Columbia Valley Pioneer on March 8th 2019.

St. Patrick’s Day Tea and Bake Sale coming up Saturday, March 16th.

It has been 12 years since the Valley GoGo Sisters held their first St. Patrick’s Day Tea and Bake Sale. Every year since 2007, the money raised has been donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s (SLF) Grandmothers Campaign.

The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched the Grandmothers Campaign in March 2006, in response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers as they struggled to care for millions of children orphaned by the AIDS pandemic. Without hesitation or complaint, Africa’s grandmothers have stepped in to care for them. Currently it is estimated that there are almost 11 million AIDS orphans under the age of 15 in sub-Saharan Africa.

The SLF Grandmothers Campaign are equal partners with grassroots organizations of African grandmothers, who in turn strive to nurture, feed and educate their grandchildren. They work to generate income, teach their grandchildren and others about HIV prevention care and treatment, tend to the sick in their communities, help the recently bereaved, set up support groups, harvest the crops, and advocate for women’s rights.

The SLF Grandmothers Campaign currently boasts more than 240 grandmothers groups across Canada, the Valley Gogo Sisters being one of the most longstanding.

The St Pat’s Day Tea is a chance to celebrate the approach of spring, get together with friends and neighbours in a welcoming atmosphere, and enjoy and buy delicious treats. At the same time, you will be supporting the tremendous fundraising efforts of a small group of grandmothers here in the Valley. The $112,000, which they have raised since 2007, has had a huge impact on the lives of grandmothers, and the children in their care, on the other side of the world.

Come and join us at Christ Church Trinity in Invermere, on Saturday, March 16th, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m
