Grandmothers group throws spotlight on unsung heroes of Africa

A Halton-based grandmothers group will hold an event aimed to inform and inspire residents about the unsung heroes of Africa.

Put on by Oomama, Grandmothers: The Unsung (S)heroes of Africa and the Canadian Sisterhood that Supports Them is set for Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Sir John Colborne Recreation Centre (1565 Old Lakeshore Rd.) in Oakville.

The event will include videos, songs and discussions about African grandmothers left to care for their grandchildren orphaned by the AIDS pandemic.

Oomama is one of 240 Canadian grandmother groups part of the campaign led by the Stephen Lewis Foundation to support grandmothers in Africa whose grandchildren have lost their parents to HIV and AIDS.

Admission for the event is $5, which includes coffee and sweets.
