1. Dear Grandmothers and Grandothers

Welcome to the April issue of the Granny Bulletin!

In each edition of the Bulletin over the next year, we’ll be “revealing” a new activity, resource, event or idea that all grandmothers groups in Canada, the UK, the US and Australia can put their own spin on, to help mark and celebrate the Campaign’s Ten Year Anniversary. You’ll find the first reveal at the end of this Bulletin, so make sure you read all the way through and share with your group or region.  Our accomplishments over the past ten years should make all of us exceedingly proud!  For those of us at the SLF, it gives us tremendous strength and purpose to continue to support and amplify the voices of the African grandmothers and community-based organizations that are changing the course of the AIDS pandemic forever.

With admiration,
Graham, Ilana and the Grandmothers Campaign team

2. Paying Tribute to Mothers

Mother's Day

On May 8th, we celebrate Mother’s Day – a time to honour the mothers and grandmothers in our lives. It’s also a time to keep our partners in sub-Saharan Africa and the communities they serve close to our hearts, where Mother’s Day can often be a complicated occasion. In the midst of mourning the loss of so many mothers to AIDS, there is celebration of the life-giving contributions of countless grandmothers who have stepped in to care for millions of children orphaned by the virus – grandmothers who show astonishing resilience and who bring new meaning to mothering and Mother’s Day.

This July, on the eve of the International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, hundreds of South African grandmothers will gather together to lay collective claim to their human rights, as grandmothers at similar Gatherings in Swaziland (2010) and Uganda (2015) have done before them. But first, they mark another Mother’s Day together. A Mother’s Day spent remembering lost mothers, and celebrating the grandmothers who have – with herculean effort and love – become mothers once again.

Mother's Day 2

As grandmothers and members of the Campaign, your hearts have always been with the African grandmothers who have become mothers all over again, as they raise a generation of children orphaned by AIDS.

This Mother’s Day, the SLF is again offering two beautiful printed or electronic cards to commemorate and celebrate mothering in all its forms.

We invite you to make a donation in lieu of a gift, and send a beautiful printed or electronic card to your loved one(s). You can send one of the Foundation’s two available cards yourself, have us send it on your behalf, or donate online and send an e-card for immediate delivery.

3. It’s Time to Stride in Solidarity

10 Yr Anni Stride

The sun is shining, and it’s that time of year to put on your walking shoes, t-shirts, Stride scarves, hats, and sun block and join us for the Stride to Turn the Tide! It’s now a spring tradition.

Stride is another great way to show solidarity with African grandmothers across sub-Saharan Africa — who walk with purpose every day. They walk to get health care in far-away clinics and markets, to collect water and deliver grandchildren safely to school, to provide urgent home-based care, to protest violations of their human rights, and to enjoy precious time with family and friends. It’s why Stride has resonated with grandmothers groups all across Canada.

As you walk this year – whether around your community for one Stride day – or while tracking your steps by pedometer for many Stride days – celebrate the impact of your solidarity over the last 10 years, and remember the distance left to go.
And let’s make that number 10 matter. How about recruiting 10 more friends to walk with your group? Or get 10 more friends to pledge their support? Or collectively increase your team goal by 10 kilometres? These are just our ideas; we know you can think creatively to mark Stride in a special way!

We’re here to support you! Traditional walk and virtual walk resources are available now at

4. Monthly Reveals for the 10 Year Anniversary

Each month during the 10 Year Anniversary of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign we will reveal a special resource or tool to help you mark this monumental year.

Monthly April

To mark the 10 Year Anniversary of the Grandmothers Campaign, we have beautiful commemorative pins to proudly showcase your commitment to turning the tide of AIDS in Africa.  We know they’ll be a conversation starter!

The metal pins (1in x .75in) are now available to groups on consignment. For group members, the cost is only $1.50; if you want to sell them as a fundraiser, we suggest $5 a pin.

Please contact your Campaign Officer to place an order or to learn more!

In addition, we have some great new 10 Year Anniversary print materials. Check them out below, and be in touch if you think they’ll be useful to your group. They are also all posted on our website here.

10 Year Anniversary Materials:

Reflection and Renewal Gathering Correction!

In last month’s Granny Bulletin when referring to the success of the BC Super Gathering, we mentioned that 23 of 25 grandmothers groups participated. What we should have said is 23 of 25 grandmothers groups in the Greater Van Gogos and another 19 groups from across the province participated in the gathering – that’s 42 groups!
