The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Bags and Bling is set for May 11.
The Orillia Mariposa Grandmothers to Grandmothers group is a part of Stephen Lewis’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and have been quietly fundraising for the last 12 years to help those African grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren orphaned by the AIDS epidemic.
This group of approximately 40 “Grandmothers” (who may or may not actually be grandmothers – or mothers!) meets monthly to plan fundraising events in Orillia throughout the year.
They have held book exchanges, mini-golf tournaments, Bags and Bling sales, Art from the Attic sales, Yards and Yarns sales, and Christmas Cookie Walks.
Thanks to the generous outpouring of support from Orillians they have enjoyed tremendous success in all of their ventures and invariably there are long line-ups of customers before the doors open at every one of their fundraisers.
The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Bags and Bling sale is just around the corner – Saturday, May 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church, 62 Peter St. in Orillia.
Once again, donations from Orillia and surrounding communities has been overwhelming! They have mountains of gently-used handbags, miles of beautiful scarves, and a treasure trove of costume and good quality rings, necklaces, watches, brooches, and more.
Mother’s Day is the very next day, so why not take mom out on a shopping trip? If you have little ones at home this is the perfect time to pick up great “dress-up” things! They also have a craft table of items created by our grandmothers.
