SUMMARY:Peace by Chocolate - Mar. 13-20 (Online\, Multi-day)
DESCRIPTION:This is the first in our series of virtual book talks on the theme of the Canadian immigrant experience. The online discussion\, with author Jon Tattrie and CEO Tareq Hadhad\, will be available to viewers from March 13 to March 20\, inclusive. Registration is available on Eventbrite by clicking here. This event is free\, but donations to the Grandmothers Campaign are welcome. \nPeace by Chocolate: The Hadhad Family’s Remarkable Journey from Syria to Canada tells the true story of the Hadhad family who lost everything in the Syrian war and arrived as refugees in Antigonish NS where they rebuilt their chocolate business. This is a wonderful feel-good story about a town\, its people and a family determined not only to build their life again but also to give back to the community and country which welcomed them. Author Jon Tattrie will be in discussion with Tareq Hadhad\, CEO of Peace by Chocolate\, and the eldest son of the Hadhad family. \nJon Tattrie is the author of six non-fiction books (including a Canadian best seller) and two novels. He works as a journalist for CBC News and has taught journalism at the University of King’s College and fiction writing at Dalhousie University. \nTareq Hadhad is the CEO and Founder of Peace by Chocolate. Tareq has spoken extensively – including appearances at Amnesty International’s Human Rights Conference\, TEDx events\, the World Bank\, and the OECD. Passionate about peace and entrepreneurship\, Tareq has a focus on job creation and is a board member at Invest Nova Scotia. \nYou do not need to have read the book to enjoy this event\, but we are sure you will want to afterwards!\nThere is no charge to register\, however we would welcome donations to the Grandmothers Campaign. Click here to make a donation.

SUMMARY:Virtual Stride to Turn the Tide (Multi-Day)
DESCRIPTION:Campbell River Grandmothers to Grandmothers are doing a Virtual Stride Walk April 11 – 25. Grandmothers and Grand others will be walking\, jogging\, riding (inside or out) or maybe even gardening over 15 days to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the SLF Grandmothers Campaign. We are being active in some way to show solidarity with African Grandmothers. \nBy reporting kilometres walked we will try to fill a virtual water cistern to represent the heavy loads the African grandmothers might carry for their household needs. We have included the local and scenic Greenways loop as a suggested location to do some of our social distance walking. Registration is $20 placed onto our team page. There will be fun daily draw prizes for all those that report their distance on the day(s) they walk.

SUMMARY:Final Day: The Forgotten Home Child (Multi-Day\, Online)
DESCRIPTION:This is the second event in the Old Orchard Blossoms’ and BramGrans’ series of author conversations which are focused on some aspect of immigration to Canada. Genevieve Graham’s novel\, The Forgotten Home Child\, examines the lives of orphaned children\, or children living in poverty who were shipped from Britain to Canada from 1869 to 1948 to work on farms and as domestics\, supposedly to give them a better life. This relatively unknown chapter in Canadian history comes to life as Ms. Graham uses her extensive research to develop her characters and her plot. She will be interviewed by best-selling historical fiction writer\, Jennifer Robson. You will enjoy their discussions of the book\, the research\, the writing of historical fiction\, and also learn about their newest novels. \nThis pre-recorded event will be available to watch from May 22 until May 30\, inclusive. A link to the YouTube video will be sent to all registrants a few days before the start date. \nGenevieve Graham is a best-selling author of historical fiction. Her mission is to bring Canadian history to life through her fiction\, and her most recent 6 books focus on different Canadian historical events and the people who lived through them. She was brought up in Toronto\, trained as a musician and now lives in Nova Scotia. Jennifer Robson is another best-selling historical fiction author who has written six novels set during and after the two world wars. She has a Ph.D. in British economic and social history from Oxford\, is a former editor\, and now lives in Toronto. \nThere is no cost to register or to attend this event; however we do hope you will consider making a donation to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers Campaign. Your contributions will ensure that vital programs through grassroots organizations will be sustainable for the African grandmothers and the children in their care. Donations of $20 or more will receive a tax receipt. \nRegister at: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-forgotten-home-child-registration-146982609943
