DESCRIPTION:This is the second event in the Old Orchard Blossoms’ and BramGrans’ series of author conversations which are focused on some aspect of immigration to Canada. Genevieve Graham’s novel\, The Forgotten Home Child\, examines the lives of orphaned children\, or children living in poverty who were shipped from Britain to Canada from 1869 to 1948 to work on farms and as domestics\, supposedly to give them a better life. This relatively unknown chapter in Canadian history comes to life as Ms. Graham uses her extensive research to develop her characters and her plot. She will be interviewed by best-selling historical fiction writer\, Jennifer Robson. You will enjoy their discussions of the book\, the research\, the writing of historical fiction\, and also learn about their newest novels. \nThis pre-recorded event will be available to watch from May 22 until May 30\, inclusive. A link to the YouTube video will be sent to all registrants a few days before the start date. \nGenevieve Graham is a best-selling author of historical fiction. Her mission is to bring Canadian history to life through her fiction\, and her most recent 6 books focus on different Canadian historical events and the people who lived through them. She was brought up in Toronto\, trained as a musician and now lives in Nova Scotia. Jennifer Robson is another best-selling historical fiction author who has written six novels set during and after the two world wars. DESCRIPTION:On Earth Day weekend\, the Comox Valley Glacier Grannies are pleased to present ‘Art From the Attic\,’ a huge sale of upcycled art.\nCome and browse through hundreds of pieces of art featuring treasures and bargains for every budget and taste. Choose from a remarkable collection of works from near and far\, including paintings (watercolour & oil)\, Japanese woodcuts\, sculpture\, decorative pottery\, photography (modern & antique)\, drawings\, African batik\, felting\, quilting\, embroidery\, limited-edition prints\, stained glass\, art and vintage posters\, and Indigenous art from Canada\, the United States\, and Australia. Many pieces have been professionally appraised and will be offered below appraised value.\nOur “Boutique” selection of higher-priced works includes a limited-edition Robert Bateman print\, oil paintings by Salt Spring artist Gwen Ruckle\, numbered prints by Bruce Cryer\, a silk screen by Roy Henry Vickers\, and signed limited-edition prints by Ojibwe artist Gelineau Fisher. Works in the medium range of “Fabulous Finds” include locally-made fabric art pieces\, a Haida shawl by Clarence Mills\, portrait drawings by African artist R. Klla\, a limited-edition print by local artist Luke Raffin\, and an original “Star Wars—The Empire Strikes Back” movie poster with as issued folds. We also offer a wide selection of “Bargain” posters and prints.\nAll funds raised by Art From the Attic will go to the Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. SUMMARY:Victoria Grandmothers Virtual Cycle Tour
DESCRIPTION:Choose your challenge! VG4A’s virtual cycle tour challenges each rider to pick the distance she can cover in the four weeks from August 13th – September 9th. Riders can use conventional bikes\, unconventional bikes\, e-bikes\, or even stationary bikes\, and cycle alone or with friends. All women 55 or older are welcome\, from beginner to veteran\, and it’s not necessary to join a grandmothers group. Cyclists will report their weekly kilometers to their team captain. As the grand total of kilometers grows\, participants will be guided on a virtual tour of sub-Saharan Africa to meet some of the women working for the community-based organizations they are supporting.\nRegistration is $20.
