The quilting bee started in Regina with members of Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers Regina\, and we are pleased to host the first stop of the cross-Canada quilt show\, with more than 35 stops in all ten provinces! \nCanadian and African Grandmothers developed the design; more than 300 grandmothers crafted and contributed pieces to this unique quilt; and\, 25 Grandmothers Groups in seven provinces across Canada sewed the quilt in a cross-country quilting bee.

SUMMARY:Grassroot Grannies 15th annual Plant Sale & Marketplace
DESCRIPTION:A dedicated group of Grassroot Grannies retrieve hundreds of hardy perennials from their gardens\, source donations from local nurseries\, make garden art and stage an eclectic raffle to raise money for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers Campaign which supports African grannies raise their grandchildren whose parents died of AIDS. Every year on the Mother’s Day weekend in May\, plant hungry fans come to this popular event while picking up sage advice from master gardeners. The pandemic shut down the sale in 2020 & 2021\, but Grassroot Grannies roared back in 2022. Over the past 15 years this event has raised $95\,051.

As well as basic fabrics such as fleece\, flannelette\, cottons\, wools\, and blend\,s expect to find a wide selection of quilting fabric\, ‘fancies’ (great for costumes)\, drapery and upholstery materials and all manner of notions such as thread\, zippers\, buttons\, ribbon\,and beads. Depending on the year\, we may also receive donations of equipment such as sewing machines\, hand looms\, cutters\, ball winders\, and templates. Our merchandise is priced to sell (most fabric from $2 to $5 per metre and yarn from $2 per ball. Bargains abound. \nAdmission is $2. On Friday only\, and to manage crowds\, tickets must be obtained through Eventbrite. Especially when there is also a silent auction\, a marketplace and light refreshments. \nThis delightful afternoon is put on by Toronto Grandmothers Embrace\, part of the Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation supporting African grandmothers looking after and providing for their orphaned grandchildren who lost their parents to the Aids Pandemic in Sub-Saharan Africa. \nBecause both our speaker\, Steve Burrows\, and our birdwalk guides Chip and Linda Weseloh are donating their time and our venue cost is modest\, we are able to keep our ticket costs low.
