SUMMARY:Final Day: The Forgotten Home Child (Multi-Day\, Online)
DESCRIPTION:This is the second event in the Old Orchard Blossoms’ and BramGrans’ series of author conversations which are focused on some aspect of immigration to Canada. Genevieve Graham’s novel\, The Forgotten Home Child\, examines the lives of orphaned children\, or children living in poverty who were shipped from Britain to Canada from 1869 to 1948 to work on farms and as domestics\, supposedly to give them a better life. This relatively unknown chapter in Canadian history comes to life as Ms. Graham uses her extensive research to develop her characters and her plot. She will be interviewed by best-selling historical fiction writer\, Jennifer Robson. You will enjoy their discussions of the book\, the research\, the writing of historical fiction\, and also learn about their newest novels. \nThis pre-recorded event will be available to watch from May 22 until May 30\, inclusive. A link to the YouTube video will be sent to all registrants a few days before the start date. \nGenevieve Graham is a best-selling author of historical fiction. Her mission is to bring Canadian history to life through her fiction\, and her most recent 6 books focus on different Canadian historical events and the people who lived through them. She was brought up in Toronto\, trained as a musician and now lives in Nova Scotia. Jennifer Robson is another best-selling historical fiction author who has written six novels set during and after the two world wars. She has a Ph.D. in British economic and social history from Oxford\, is a former editor\, and now lives in Toronto. \nThere is no cost to register or to attend this event; however we do hope you will consider making a donation to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers Campaign. Your contributions will ensure that vital programs through grassroots organizations will be sustainable for the African grandmothers and the children in their care. Donations of $20 or more will receive a tax receipt. \nRegister at: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-forgotten-home-child-registration-146982609943

SUMMARY:Explore Africa - Book (Online)
DESCRIPTION:In a casual and spontaneous conversation\, Ruby Newman will discuss Baking Cakes in Kigali with author Gaile Parkin. Audience participation will be encouraged. \nBaking Cakes in Kigali (storyline)\nAngel Tungaraza has recently moved to Rwanda from her native Tanzania with her husband Pius and their five orphaned grandchildren. She pursues her passion: her small but increasingly successful business\, baking individually designed cakes for her neighbours and friends from the community.\nHauntingly charming\, funny\, and involving\, Baking Cakes in Kigali is a novel about the real meaning of reconciliation — about how\, in the aftermath of tragedy\, life goes on and people still manage to find reasons to celebrate. \nThe book’s theme resonates with the work Grandmothers Partnering with Africa does to support African grandmothers affected HIV and AIDS.

SUMMARY:Virtual Stride to Turn the Tide (Multi-Day)
DESCRIPTION:Campbell River Grandmothers to Grandmothers are doing a Virtual Stride Walk April 11 – 25. Grandmothers and Grand others will be walking\, jogging\, riding (inside or out) or maybe even gardening over 15 days to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the SLF Grandmothers Campaign. We are being active in some way to show solidarity with African Grandmothers. \nBy reporting kilometres walked we will try to fill a virtual water cistern to represent the heavy loads the African grandmothers might carry for their household needs. We have included the local and scenic Greenways loop as a suggested location to do some of our social distance walking. Registration is $20 placed onto our team page. There will be fun daily draw prizes for all those that report their distance on the day(s) they walk.
