Join Grandmothers Partnering with Africa for “Discover African Art” with Arlene Kushnir.
Sub-Saharan Africa is home to numerous and varied cultures who have been creating extraordinary works of art for centuries. In this illustrated lecture we will time travel from the mysterious Terra Cotta sculptures of 500 BC Nok through the realistic cast bronzes of 10th C Ife and 15th C Benin and then visit the imaginative, abstracted wood masks and sculptures of West and Central Africa to finish with the resplendent 21st C wall hangings by El Anatsui. Along the way we will explore the meaning and function of these magnificent works of art.
