Grandmothers to Grandmothers – Bridge Crossing 2026
The Ottawa One World Grannies with the Aylmer GoGos invite you to join us for the 3rd annual Bridge Crossing event on National Grandparents Day, Sunday, September 13th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Adàwe Crossing pedestrian bridge in Strathcona Park, Range Road, Ottawa.
Cross this beautiful bridge with us and recognize that all grandmothers and their families are connected across many different waters and bridges.
This year, we’re celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the founding of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign by the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) in 2006. The Campaign continues to respond to the HIV and AIDS epidemic across the African continent by raising awareness and funds for African grandmothers, their grandchildren, and the SLF community-led grassroots projects. We also work to advocate for human rights and raise awareness about HIV and other health and social justice issues affecting African grandmothers and their communities.
The fight to eliminate HIV and AIDS is not over. A new crisis has appeared with the loss of global funding to meet critical needs. Almost half of SLF partner organizations in Africa have stopped or drastically reduced employing community workers, cutting HIV testing and education, and diminishing treatment supports among other critical services. Due to life-saving medications, AIDS-related deaths dropped 70% between 2005 and 2024. The loss of funding threatens to reverse the tremendous gains made in the last twenty years.
Bring your family and picnic in Strathcona Park; meet local politicians; write a personal message for an African grandmother; listen to African music; enjoy children’s face painting and learn about the African continent; walk a ‘Bridge Crossing’ to the other side of the bridge to a Grandmother’s welcome at the “Bridge Public House” restaurant, and make a donation to the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign.
